What is a crown?

A crown is an ideal solution in the event following; a large restoration, crack on a tooth or after a root canal procedure.  The tooth will be reduced about 2-3 mm and an impression will be taken in order to create a crown with a precise margin along the preparation.  A crown is typically done in two appointments; however Ramstein Dental Care has the ability to complete the process in one session.  This is a great alternative for those patients with difficulty scheduling multiple appointments or those wishing for an immediate restoration.

What should I do if my temporary falls off while my crown is being made?

A temporary is made in order to maintain space for the permanent crown.  If a temporary falls off, try to replace it on the tooth and contact your dentist.  If the dentist is unavailable replace the temporary until an appointment is scheduled.  A great alternative would be to place toothpaste or Vaseline into the temporary.  DO NOT TRY TO SUPERGLUE A TEMPORARY OR A CROWN.  This could cause damage to the natural tooth and may result in extraction of that tooth.

Are composite restorations okay for my teeth?

Composite restorations are a great alternative when a patient is interested in a tooth colored filling.  The composite materials used are easily bonded to the tooth and typically with little sensitivity and a safe method for restoring teeth.

What is a Root Canal?

A Root Canal is a procedure performed when the nerve of a tooth is non-responsive under certain conditions.  Often times a tooth has too deep of decay requiring a Root Canal because of root exposure.  Another possible cause would be due to an infection (abscess) around the root surface.  During a Root Canal the nerve is removed manually or by rotary instruments.

What should I do if I have major pain or swelling?

See a Doctor as soon as possible.  This could be from an infection of the tooth or tissue.  A common solution would be extraction or root canal therapy.  Antibiotic and pain medications are often prescribed in conjunction.

The Dentist or Hygienist recommends frequent teeth cleanings; is this normal?

It is recommended patients regularly schedule cleanings twice a year.  For those patients with periodontal disease (gum disease) or those lacking regular scheduled cleanings it is common recommendation for more frequent appointments. When plaque has built up along the gum line it can harden and spread below it.  In severe cases this requires anesthetic with a procedure called Scaling and Root Planing. This is done in 2-4 appointments with a three to four month recall in cleaning.

What is a Veneer or tooth bonding?

A veneer is thin porcelain or resin based material placed on the Labial (front surface) of a tooth. Many people request a Veneer in order to close spaces in between teeth, remove staining or demineralization. These restorations are to be treated differently than typical fillings. On front teeth they are susceptible to fracturing; since these teeth take the force when biting. They are commonly done and have great results for the patient.
